Biography: Inspired by musical communities across Canada and influenced by diverse interests including literature, improvisation, and film; Toronto-based composer, producer, vocalist, poet, and bandleader Tristan Zaba’s music breaks boundaries of genre and form. From interactive live electronics pieces to rock albums to choral music, Tristan’s work seeks to question itself, its audience members, and its performers through the use of intertextual reference and quotation.

Zaba has premiered pieces at festivals including the Source Song Festival, the Winnipeg New Music Festival, Orford Musique, and Casse Tête. Collaborators have included ensembles such as Quatuor Bozzini, the Mississauga Summer Chorale, the Orchestre de la Francophonie, and the Zyra Trio. He was the 2019-20 Composer in Residence of the University of Toronto Guitar Ensemble, the 2018-19 Composer in Residence of the MacMillan Singers, and is studying orchestral blend as part of the ACTOR (analysis, creation, and teaching of orchestration) project. Tristan has won numerous honors including the SOCAN Foundation’s Choral Award for Young Composers, and has been the recipient of grants from the Canada Council for the Arts, Alberta Foundation for the Arts, SOCAN Foundation, and University of Toronto.

Source Moment: The open and collaborative atmosphere I experienced at the 2019 Source Festival was entirely unique. The creative and practical influences of the staff, performers, and 2019 festival participants continue to be felt in my work.
