Shari Eve Feldman

Soprano

Years at Source: 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019
Biography: Shari Eve Feldman, soprano, is happiest when collaborating with colleagues at Source Song Festival. She is passionate about all things musical, especially chamber music literature, authentic performance practice, interpretation of avant garde repertoire and extended techniques, and Semitic song literature.

She has sung in projects ranging from large choral and operatic works to solo recital engagements with organizations including the Master Players Concert Series at the University of Delaware, the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra, Baltimore Concert Opera, Opera Delaware, Delaware Symphony Orchestra, Choir School of Delaware, Washington Piano Society, New Music Delaware Festival, StageFree, and the Maryland Opera Studio at the University of Maryland. Shari was a national semifinalist for the NATS Solo Voice Competition and has performed as part of a Young Artist MN Duo at Source since 2015.

Shari loves collaborating with composers on new music as well as curating recital programs meant to shed light on social injustices, mental health stigmas, and the need -- not privilege -- for music as a storytelling vehicle and form of self-expression. Shari lives in the DMV region, where she is pursuing a Doctorate in Musical Arts and a Certificate in Nonprofit Management at the University of Maryland.

Source Moment: "Each year at Source has been an entirely unique experience; I can’t rank one above another. Here are my favorite memories (plural) from Source...

Watching François Le Roux and Olivier Godin give a recital of French mélodies, realizing that there is a right way to perform it, and recognizing that THIS was the right way. (2015);

Listening to Libby Larsen explain how she rhythmically dictates speech cadences and sets prose. (2015);

Håkan Hagegård’s staging of Argento's ""The Andrée Expedition"" during “Restless Searchers” at the Ordway. (2016);

Everything about coaching with Håkan Hagegård. (2016);

Steven Swanson telling us to “spill air;” to “breathe when you need it and make it a moment.” (2017);

Julius Drake asking me if ""...I deliberately ignored EVERY marking Schubert wrote in 'Rastlose Liebe'"" and realizing that this man was going to change, forever and for the better, my relationship with German Lieder. (2017);

Martha Guth and Spencer Myer performing “Execution Songs” by Andrew Staniland. (2018);

Finally appreciating the incredible variety and crystalline beauty in a strophic song; credit for that goes to Linda Tutas Haugen’s “Gjendine’s Lullaby.” (2018);

The premiere of Libby Larsen’s ""Intergalactic Night Club,"" Tamara Wilson and Warren Jones’ “Frontiers” recital, Paul Sperry’s stories, and Warren Jones’s words: “Singing alone takes courage.” (2019);

Marg Walker “gifting” me a printed copy of her (then) unpublished poem, “Blessing,” in memory of my grandmother, who had passed away the week prior. (2019);

I’m running out of ways to express my thanks to Mark Bilyeu and Clara Osowski for their ceaseless energy and boundless love of song, poetry, and artistic collaboration...but I’ll keep trying. Source Song Festival filled a void in my musicianship that I didn’t even know was there. These are just a small selection of the beautiful memories this festival has provided. (2015-2019)"
