Evan L. Snyder

Composer

Years at Source: 2019
Biography: Although he has been often praised for his “genuine understanding of the human voice” and his “unapologetically beautiful music,” for Evan L. Snyder, bringing stories to life through music is the center of his work. His first opera, A Capacity for Evil (a Holmesian detective tale that broke from operatic norms), was a winner of the 2017 Fort Worth Opera Frontiers Competition and was premiered fall 2018, in a sold out run with Detroit’s Opera MODO. Outside of his work in opera, Evan has also written numerous songs, cycles, and chamber works, which have been performed by such performers as the Fifth House Ensemble, ConTempus Initiative, Richard Fracker, John Riesen, Joseph Baunoch, and many more. A recent graduate of Michigan State University, Evan holds degrees in composition, music theory, and voice. Evan's current projects include his second full-length opera, The Clef of the Universe, and a new song cycle commissioned for internationally-acclaimed soprano, Tamara Wilson.

Source Moment: There were so many great workshops and so much great learning going on, and each one of the concerts was a truly amazing experience--but my favorite memory of the festival is actually of going out to get dinner with Libby. One night, before a concert, she and the group of composers got to go out, have some noodles, and just talk about whatever. We picked her brain about her experiences throughout her career, shared stories with each other, talked about the festival, and just had a wonderful time. Definitely a memory I treasure.
